Hyundai Motor Group Teams Up with Google for Next-Gen Navigation and Software Innovation

Date: December 12, 2024

Hyundai Motor Group is taking a bold step forward in revolutionising the in-car experience by partnering with Google to integrate cutting-edge software into its vehicles. This collaboration combines Hyundai’s push for software-defined vehicles (SDVs) with Google’s extensive mapping and data resources, promising to enhance navigation, infotainment, and future mobility for drivers worldwide.

Enhanced Navigation Experience

The partnership begins with the integration of Google Maps Platform into Hyundai vehicles, starting with Kia passenger cars in North America. Google’s Places API brings access to detailed information about 250 million locations worldwide, providing:

  • Accurate business hours and contact details.
  • User reviews and ratings for locations.
  • Detailed navigation and mapping features.

For EV drivers, this means better access to charging station data, reviews, and availability, simplifying long-distance journeys and day-to-day navigation.

Powered by Android Automotive Operating System

In addition to the Google Maps integration, Hyundai Motor Group has adopted Google’s Android Automotive Operating System (AAOS) across its brands, including Kia and Genesis. This system provides a seamless in-car experience with benefits such as:

  • Integrated apps: Enjoy access to familiar apps for music, navigation, and more.
  • Over-the-air updates: Regular software updates ensure your vehicle always has the latest features.
  • Personalisation: Drivers can enjoy tailored infotainment systems that adapt to their needs.

Why It Matters for EV Owners

This collaboration is especially exciting for EV drivers, as it aims to provide:

  1. Better Route Planning: Real-time updates on charging station locations, availability, and reviews.
  2. Energy Optimisation: Smarter navigation tools that account for range and energy use.
  3. AI-Driven Innovation: Future features that could revolutionise how EVs integrate with smart cities and connected infrastructure.

Driving the Future

Hyundai Motor Group’s Chang Song, President of the Advanced Vehicle Platform Division, described the partnership as a move to deliver customer-centric mobility solutions, stating, Our collaboration with Google will broaden our technology coverage in the mobility market and provide greater value to customers.

Jorgen Behrens, Vice President of Google Maps Automotive, added, We’re empowering drivers to navigate confidently and efficiently by integrating Google Maps into Hyundai vehicles.

Rolling Out Globally

The initial rollout begins with Kia vehicles in North America, with future expansion planned for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models globally. This marks another step in Hyundai’s vision to lead the mobility industry with innovative SDV technology.

EVJACK  is excited to see how this collaboration will transform the driving experience for Hyundai and Kia drivers, especially in the EV market. Could this be the boost Hyundai needs to compete with software-driven rivals like Tesla? Only time will tell!
